Home is Where the Heart Begins: Do you notice?…

When you’re wife cleans the house, do you notice? When your husband does a nice job mowing the lawn, do you notice? When the children do what they need to do, without being told, do you notice?

We are all guilty of leaving compliments unsaid. It’s easy to do! We are busy tending to work, school, family, and home; where’s the time for tending to our relationships? The ‘real’ationship stuff; the hugs, kisses, and compliments. Somehow, way too often, our gestures of love and support get pushed aside for later…when we’re not so busy.

Make a mental note. In fact, make a large note and place it on the refrigerator…for everyone to see.

“Reminder: Tell someone how much you appreciate what they did”

As your family walks by your note, on their way to school, work, or down the hallway, they are reminded of your commitment. Plus, as time moves on, they’ll see you make the effort, and they’ll want to join in. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be part of the positive trend going around the house?

Yes, that might sound wishy-washy, and for a while it might be, but you are making a difference. If not in your home, perhaps at school or work. They will realize that making an effort to appreciate another is a plus in any relationship; not just home. If you accomplish that with your note, then you are making change happen. How will you know? Through the conversations you have with your family, by the compliment they give you, or perhaps through something you hear one of them say to a friend. It could be as simple as them telling you. Sometime, somewhere you will hear something, and you’ll know.

So grab a piece of paper, or maybe a dry erase board that allows you to continually change the message, and write yourself a reminder. If no one but you decides to chime in on the compliments, at least you can move along in your day knowing you make the effort to be more positive in your life.

By the way…if you read this note all the way through, then you’re doing a great job working toward change.
